Ballad of the Gingerbread Man
A viewer favorite among my recent works. A scene of ridiculousness unfolds as we
see the legend himself, the UN-catch-able gingerbread man as he makes his latest heist
getaway from the boys in blue, all down a desert road as the sun sets behind the cacti
strewn landscape. Thick outlines and abstracted proportions liken to classic cartoons,
colors straight out of a 90s animation palette, with the message we who grew up with
broadcast programming still can hear as a delirium induced echo; “Well be Right back”. I
took major inspiration from the concept of the television bumper or bump, also known in
other parts of the world as an eye catch. Bumpers were used both creatively and
extensively by the Adult Swim network throughout the 90s into the current day, but they
were arguably in their most experimental form artistically during the late 90s. Freeze
frames of not just a scene, but a state of mind. Most of us can dimly recall the most
memorable bumps slithering into our minds as we drifted into late night
unconsciousness.
